Copenhagen, and the case for cold water

A city that has organised itself around bicycles, harbour swimming and going home at five.

The interesting thing about Copenhagen is not any single wellness offering. It is that the infrastructure makes the healthy version of the day the easy one: you cycle because it is faster, you swim because the harbour is clean, you stop working because everyone else has.

Winter is not a reason to stay away. It is when the sauna culture makes sense.

Move

Walks, water, hills
  • Cycle the harbour circuit

    Central

Rent for the week, not the day. The bridges make a natural loop of about 12km.

  • Islands Brygge harbour bath

    Islands Brygge

Free, clean, and busy from May. Locals swim year-round.

  • Amager Fælled

    Amager

Wild-ish grassland ten minutes from the centre, full of runners at six in the morning.

Eat

What the locals order
  • Smørrebrød at lunch

    Indre By

The proper version is a sit-down meal, not a snack. Rye, fish, pickles, beer.

  • Torvehallerne

    Nørreport

Market hall for fish, cheese and coffee. Go for the produce rather than the hot food.

  • Bakery breakfast

    Nørrebro

Danish sourdough and cardamom buns are worth reorganising a morning around.

Restore

Where the noise stops
  • A floating sauna

    Harbour

Several operate along the harbour. Book ahead in winter; the cold plunge is the water itself.

  • Assistens Cemetery

    Nørrebro

Used as a park. People picnic between the graves and nobody finds it strange.

  • The Botanical Garden glasshouse

    Indre By

Warm and humid in February, which is exactly the point.

Stay

Neighbourhoods
  • Nørrebro

Young, dense, best food, close to the lakes for a morning run.

  • Vesterbro

Central, walkable, quieter than its reputation suggests.

One good day

  1. 1

Cycle to the lakes before eight.

  2. 2

Bakery, then the market hall for whatever looks best.

  3. 3

    Long smørrebrød lunch.

  4. 4

Harbour swim, then a sauna if the weather has an opinion.

  5. 5

Dinner early. Bed early. This is the local rhythm.

Don't bother

Paying for a wellness package. The city's best restorative assets are public and free.
