Lisbon, at walking pace

A city built on hills that makes movement unavoidable, and a food culture that never medicalised eating.

Lisbon does wellness without the vocabulary. The hills handle the cardio, lunch is grilled fish and greens because that is what is cheap and good, and the afternoon pause is a cultural habit rather than a recovery protocol.

Come for the light in spring, when the jacaranda are out and the city has not yet filled up.

Move

Walks, water, hills
  • The riverside from Cais do Sodré to Belém

    Riverside

Flat, breezy, about 6km one way. Walk it out, take the tram back.

  • Parque Florestal de Monsanto

    Monsanto

The city's forest. Proper trails, almost no tourists, cooler by several degrees in summer.

  • Praia de Carcavelos

    Coast

Thirty minutes by train for a morning swim before work-shaped hours begin.

Eat

What the locals order
  • The tasca lunch

    Everywhere

Look for a handwritten menu and a room full of people in work clothes. Grilled fish, boiled greens, a small glass of wine.

  • Time Out Market, early

    Cais do Sodré

Crowded by one o'clock. Worth it at 11am for the fish counters alone.

  • Mercado de Campo de Ourique

    Campo de Ourique

The neighbourhood version, less filmed, better for a slow lunch.

Restore

Where the noise stops
  • Miradouro da Senhora do Monte at sunrise

    Graça

The only hour it is quiet. Bring coffee.

  • Gulbenkian gardens

    Avenidas Novas

Free, shaded, full of turtles, and the calmest place in central Lisbon.

  • A long ferry to Cacilhas

    Almada

Ten minutes across the Tagus for wind, water and a different view of the city.

Stay

Neighbourhoods
  • Príncipe Real

Walkable, green, good bakeries, close to everything without being inside it.

  • Graça

Steep and residential. You will get your steps whether you plan to or not.

One good day

  1. 1

Coffee and a pastel de nata standing at a counter, not sitting down.

  2. 2

Walk the riverside to Belém before the heat.

  3. 3

Long lunch at a tasca; order what the room is eating.

  4. 4

    Afternoon in the Gulbenkian gardens.

  5. 5

Ferry across the river at golden hour, dinner late on the other side.

Don't bother

The queue at the most-photographed bakery. Every neighbourhood has a better one with no queue at all.
