COLLAGEN POWDER OR ENOUGH PROTEIN: WHICH ONE IS WORTH YOUR MONEY?

Collagen has achieved something most powders can only dream of: it has become both a beauty product and a pantry staple. It sits beside coffee machines, arrives in travel sachets and promises better skin from a scoop.

The sceptical response is usually that digestion breaks collagen down anyway, so you may as well eat ordinary protein. That is partly true and not quite the whole story.

Collagen is a protein rich in particular amino acids. After ingestion it is digested into amino acids and small peptides. The body does not simply send intact powder directly to your cheeks. But some collagen-derived peptides can circulate after digestion, and clinical trials have tested whether supplementation affects measurable skin outcomes.

Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have reported modest improvements in skin hydration and elasticity with hydrolysed collagen supplements. That is more evidence than exists for many beauty powders.

The caveats matter. Studies use different formulations, doses and durations. Many are relatively short. Some are funded by manufacturers. “Improved elasticity in a trial” is not the same as “reverses skin ageing.”

Adequate nutrition remains the less glamorous foundation. Skin turnover and connective tissue depend on sufficient energy, protein and micronutrients. If someone is under-eating or chronically low in protein, adding a specialised beauty supplement while ignoring the diet is backwards.

There is also no reason to assume more protein endlessly means more collagen in skin. Nutrition is not a points system where every extra scoop converts directly into a cosmetic result.

“If your diet is underpowered, start with food. A boring answer can still be the correct one.”

THE WT VERDICT

If you already eat enough protein and want to try a collagen supplement, choose one with transparent dosing and evidence tied to the actual product or a comparable formulation. Treat it as an optional experiment, not foundational skincare.

If your diet is underpowered, start with food. A boring answer can still be the correct one.
